BACHFEST MALAYSIA

Bachfest Malaysia (Malaysia Bach Festival) was founded in 2015 by its Artistic Director David Chin in commemoration of Johann Sebastian Bach’s 330th birthday anniversary, and their first concert was the premiere performance of St. John Passion in Malaysia. In commemorating the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s reformation in 2017, they performed Mass in B minor and commissioned a new work Psalm 46 by Malaysian composer Caeleb Tee in a concert organized by the Lutheran Church in Malaysia. In the 2018-19 season, they collaborated with the Gospel Culture Center Malaysia to present Bach’s cantatas and motets in liturgical setting, and perform Bach’s instrumental and vocal works with Ensemble Virama. In the 2019-2020 season, they present a series of lectures, chamber music concerts, candlelight evensong, and presentations of Bach’s monumental St. Matthew Passion in five different cities in Malaysia. They have also been invited to perform multiple chorale cantatas at Bachfest Leipzig, as well as collaboration concerts with the Thuringer Bach Collegium at Arnstadt and Eisenach, Germany in 2020. In additional to the Malaysia Bach Festival Singers and Orchestra, a new, community-based, and audition choir: Mendelssohnchor Malaysia is established in 2020, and is dedicated to perform choral music and choral-orchestral masterworks by mainly composers after J.S. Bach, led by Artistic Director David Chin and conductor Lee Mei Yen. Their first season includes performances of Schubert's Mass in G, Beethoven's Choral Fantasy, and Brahms' A German Requiem, among others.
