MEET THE ARTIST
Eugenia Lou | Double BassA native of Kuching, Sarawak, Eugenia began musical lessons on the piano at the age of 6 and was awarded LTCL diploma from the Trinity College of Music in Piano Solo Performance at the age of 16. However, the double bass became Eugenia’s true passion. In less than 3 years upon picking up the instrument, mainly self taught with guidance from the conductor of Sinfoni Okestra of Negeri Sarawak (SONS), Marcus Leong who is also a violinist, Eugenia was awarded Grade 8 certification from the Australia Music Examination Board (AMEB) with high distinction. Subsequently, she came to Kuala Lumpur for further studies and had a chance to study with double bassist, Foo Yin Hong and Wolfgang Steike, and had performed in master classes of Klaus Stoll and Gary Karr. She also holds FTCL and LTCL Diplomas with Distinction in Bass Solo Performance from the Trinity College of London, a first in the country.
Eugenia's performance experiences include performing with the Asian Youth Orchestra (1999-2001), where she performed in more than 40 different cities in United States, Canada, Japan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Taiwan, China, Malaysia and Singapore. Other ensembles include the Commonwealth Youth Orchestra (1998), Asian Symphony Orchestra in Vietnam (2009), Selangor Symphony Orchestra, Penang Symphony Orchestra, Penang State Symphony, Malaysian National Symphony Orchestra as well as Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. Eugenia was also a founding member and Principal double bass of the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and KL Strings Project and Ensemble Virama. Other than performing, Eugenia is also passion in teaching especially cultivating young double bass students as young as 6 years old. Other than teaching privately, she is also engaged with several local institutions as well as private and international schools where many of her students have went on to receive much acclaim, producing a number of scholarship recipients including several that went on to study at the Wells Cathedral School (UK). |
