MENDELSSOHNCHOR MALAYSIA
Mendelssohnchor Malaysia is a new choral ensemble of Bachfest Malaysia. It is an addition to the pre-existing Malaysia Bach Festival Singers and Orchestra, an award-wining professional ensemble which was founded along with Bachfest Malaysia in 2015. The choir’s name was inspired by German composer Felix Mendelssohn, who once led the Berliner Singakademie, one of the world’s oldest choral societies, and conducted the revival performance of Johann Sebastian Bach’s “St. Matthew Passion”. Not only did Mendelssohn reintroduce Bach’s music to the world, but he was among the firsts to establish the role of a conductor as the sole interpreter of the ensemble, as well as conducting with a baton. The Singakademie originated from informal evening gatherings of music lovers, and became a public choral institution which performed music of the past and present starting in 1791. Many similar choral societies were founded since, and have encouraged the composing of many large-scale choral-orchestral works since the 19th century.
As a choral society based in the capital city of the nation, Mendelssohnchor Malaysia is dedicated to build a supportive choral community through studying and performing choral works and masterpieces by great composers from the 18th-19th century and beyond. The group is currently led by Bachfest Malaysia’s Artistic Director David Chin and conductor Lee Mei Yen. Mendelssohnchor Malaysia consists of amateur and experienced singers from all walks of life, and interested singers may sign up for an audition when it is announced, usually twice per year. Upcoming concerts include Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy, Brahms’ A German Requiem, and works by Bach, Haydn, Bruckner, and Vaughan Williams, among others.
