MEET THE ARTIST
Nelson Wong | OboeNelson Wong Cheong Lum started learning the oboe at the age of 18, and decided to pursue on becoming a professional oboist ever since. He obtained Diploma of Music from the Malaysia Institute of Arts (MIA, 2009), where he studied under Duncan Thorpe, Joost Flach, and Simon Emes (Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra Oboe Sub-Principal, Co-Principal and Principal respectively). With his gifted talent, he was awarded a full scholarship from the Korea National University of Arts (KNUA) to further pursue his Master of Music degree in Oboe Performance under the guidance of Ingo Goritzki and Jong-Duk Kim from 2010-2013.
He currently serves as a principal oboist at the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) of Malaysia at Istana Budaya, in addition to maintaining a busy concert schedule and teaching private oboe lessons at several universities such as UPM, UPSI, and UITM. Nelson is one of the founding members of Bachfest Malaysia, and has also performed with the East Malaysia Bach Cantata Singers and Orchestra, where he has performed numerous major works and sacred cantatas by J. S. Bach. He often appears at the Malaysia Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) as a substitute player, as well as the Vietnam Symphony Orchestra as a principal guest substitute player. |
